University of Louisville sophomore cornerback Jaire Alexander has been named a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist.

University of Louisville sophomore Jaire Alexander has turned in a sensational first season in the secondary for the Cardinals.

And it's not just Louisville fans who think he's had a solid season.

Alexander has been named one of the 16 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is annually given to the best defensive back in college football. It's the same award former U of L star Gerod Holliman won in 2014.

In seven games, Alexander leads the Cardinals with three interceptions. He also has 23 tackles and a forced fumble.

The three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Nov. 22 and the winner will be crowned at the College Football Awards on Dec. 8.

The only other ACC defensive back listed is Clemson senior Cordrea Tankersley. Alexander is one of three sophomores on the list.
