University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino met the media on Wednesday at ACC Media Day, talking for more than five hours about his team and the league in general.
Pitino said he was "really excited" about the players he has on the roster and noted that he was cautiously optimistic about the outcome of the season. The Cardinals were picked fourth in the league by the media.
"I just think everybody talks about playing for the name on the front, last year's team and this year's team has a great attitude and they do play for the name on the front," Pitino said. "Although I am very optimistic, I am very concerned about our schedule.
"I think I made two mistakes, taking the two scholarships away and I may have over scheduled because I thought (Chinanu) Onuaku was coming back."
Pitino projected his team would play 16 to 18 top 25 teams this season. The two scholarships he was referencing is the two they took away with the self-imposed penalties. The Cardinals are two short this season.
"With the schedule we have, I just hope we make it (into the NCAA)," Pitino said. "If we don't have the No. 1 ranked schedule it will at least be the top five. We're really playing a tough schedule."
