The University of Louisville defense won last week at Virginia without All-American outside linebacker Devonte Fields, who was injured on the first defensive snap of the North Carolina State game the previous week.
Fields was not dressed for the 32-25 win over the Cavaliers but U of L coach Bobby Petrino hopes to have him back this week. Louisville will play Boston College on Saturday at noon in Chestnut Hills, Mass.
"He should be ready to play this week unless there's a setback somewhere in practice," Petrino said on Monday.
Petrino said Fields had a "good day" on Sunday and came in for treatment on Monday morning and looked like he was on schedule to make a return to the lineup for the Cardinals.
"We're hopeful," Petrino said.
Fields, who had 11 sacks last season for the Cardinals, has 24 tackles, two sacks and two tackles for a loss in seven games. He also has one interception and one pass breakup for the season.
Petrino said one improvement the Cardinals need on defense is getting to the quarterback. Louisville had 15 sacks in the first four games of the season but since has just 4.5 sacks.
"One sack is not good enough for us," Petrino said. "We need to be able to hit the quarterback."
