Bobby Petrino has a new defensive coordinator.
The University of Louisville head football coach has been talking to Peter Sirmon for a few days and on Wednesday morning Cardinal Authority confirmed that the former Oregon standout player will take over the defense with the Cardinals.
Sirmon, who was the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State last season, will replace Todd Grantham who left for Sirmon's job with the Bulldogs. Grantham was in charge of the U of L defense for three seasons.
The 39-year-old Sirmon played for seven seasons with the Tennessee Titans after his playing career at Oregon. He was a linebacker.
He started his coaching career as the linebackers coach at Central Washington in 2008 before spending the '09 season as a graduate assistant at Oregon and '10 as a GA at Tennessee under Derek Dooley.
Sirmon took over as the linebacker coach at Washington in 2012 and served also as the recruiting coordinator for the Ducks in '13. He then spent two seasons as the associate head coach, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at USC.
In his one season at Mississippi State, Sirmon's defense ranked No. 110 in total defense.
Louisville is expected to announce the hiring when his contract is finalized.
