BIO: C.J. Avery was an Under Armour All-American game participant, is the No. 221 prospect in the country and the top safety in Mississippi. He also played in the Mississippi-Alabama ALl-Star game. He was a 'Dandy Dozen' honoree by the Jackson, Miss., Clarion Legend. In high school, Avery also played quarterback. He threw for 633 yards and 10 touchdowns while also rushing for 438 yards and five touchdowns on 63 carries. Avery had 61 total tackles, including five for a loss, with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack.

LEAD RECRUITER: Cort Dennison

RECRUITMENT: With over 15 total scholarship offers, Avery made official visits to Auburn and Clemson during the season and then made his official to U of L during the weekend of the Kentucky game. He then made a trip to Mississippi State the following weekend. He was also considering Ole Miss late in his recruitment.

WHY U OF L: Avery said coming to Louisville early was a "big thing" for him because he knows there's playing time available and he had a really good connection with Dennison.

EVALUATION: A safety who likes to hit. Very instinctive defensive back who likes to strike the opponent, but also has the ball skills to turn the ball over. More of a striker than a tackler, so he can improve wrapping up and his tackling technique. Tracks the ball well in coverage. Not an elite cover guy in man-to-man situations, but he has good range. Smart player. Seems to be in the right place most of the time. - Scout.com

QUOTABLE: "Everybody in my community supported me and they think Louisville was the best move for me," Avery said. "I feel like being there early is going to help me a lot. I want to get on the field in the first game."

BOTTOM LINE: Avery is a big-time prospect and was a huge get for the Cardinals' staff out of Mississippi. He's already enrolled and is expected to battle for playing time in the fall.
