While it appeared that the team came through the Kentucky game without any major injuries, it was discovered following the game that senior Wade Tydlacka, who is responsible for both kickoffs and punts, suffered a torn cartlidge in his knee during warmups. He had surgery this afternoon and is expected to be out for two to six weeks. Kickers Nate Smith, Rob Zarrilli, Todd Flannery and others will compete for kickoff duties this week, while it appears that true freshman Brent Moody will assume the punt responsibilities.
We noticed that true freshman Preston Smith, who had been working with the quarterbacks during fall camp, has been switched to linebacker. The 6'3, 205-pound athlete also played safety in high school, but could develop into a quick and heavy hitting linebacker.
On the FieldTurf
The benefits of the new FieldTurf surface are quickly becoming apparent. With the excessive rain that the Louisville area has suffered over the recent days the U of L practice fields are seemingly waterlogged, so the team practiced in the stadium today and the field didn't appear wet at all.
Lending a Hand
While the Cardinals practice fields are rather wet, they must be in much better condition than those used by Trinity High School. The Trinity players boarded a bus after school this afternoon and made the trip to the U of L football complex, where they used one of the practice fields.
