Highland Springs, Va., offensive lineman Mehki Becton turned down offers from the in-state schools to sign with Louisville

A pleasant signing day surprise for Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino and his staff as Highland Springs, Va., offensive lineman Mehki Becton announced and signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday morning.

Becton, rated as the No. 1 offensive tackle prospect in the state of Virginia, collected scholarship offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Penn State and a host of others throughout the recruiting process.  He checks in as the No. 7 tackle in the East region and is among the top 50 at his position nationally.

Becton's commitment gives Louisville five offensive lineman signees in the 2017 class, joining Cole Bentley, Caleb Chandler, Toryque Bateman and junior college commit Ronald Rudd.

He's the 23rd member of the U of L recruiting haul.
