Belleville, Mich., sophomore cornerback M.J. Griffin has some connections at the University of Louisville.
His cousin, Jaylen Johnson, is a member of the U of L basketball team and he plays for the same 7-on-7 team that produced current U of L football freshman wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick.
So, Griffin made a recent trip to check out the Cardinals.
"I liked it a lot," Griffin said. "I got to see familiar faces while I was down there."
The 6-foot, 180-pound Griffin landed early offers from Bowling Green, Ball State, Central Michigan and Iowa State and last fall added one from Indiana. He camped at Florida State and made a visit to Tallahassee, Fla., last fall.
Griffin's relationship with U of L began last summer when he attended the Friday Night Lights camp. He said recruiting director Pete Nochta started the relationship and since he's also been talking to Lorenzo Ward.
"I have a good relationship with coach Ward," he said. "He really loves my size. I'm the same size than most of their DBs."
Griffin spent time with his father on the recent visit to campus and expects to make a return trip.
"I loved the visit," he said. "It was really beautiful weather with a little breeze and very high tempo for the team while warming up.
"Me and my dad talked to coach (Bobby) Petrino for a little bit about how the team is looking this year. Coach Nochta told me about the key players and what type of defense they ran. After that I talked to coach Ward. He said he was really glad I made it down to campus to see how they practice."
