University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino has put Dwayne Sutton on scholarship for the coming season.
Sutton, who transferred to U of L last summer from UNC-Asheville, was going to walk-on with the Cardinals. His mother works at U of L and he would have been getting free tuition because of her employment.
But now with a scholarship open, Pitino is putting him on scholarship. It was announced by U of L sports information director Kenny Klein via Twitter on Sunday night.
Sutton sat out last season at U of L but was able to practice with the Cardinals. He played one season at UNC-Asheville, averaging 12 points and 7.7 rebounds a game in 34 games.
The former standout from Manual High School was named to the All-Big South Conference Tournament team.
Pitino told Cardinal Authority last month that Sutton was "a whole lot better" than the staff expected.
