Cardinal Authority has a Q&A with Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Saint Thomas Aquinas High School junior Trenell Troutman, who committed to the University of Louisville football team in July.

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound safety Troutman started his high school career at Miami Northwestern, where former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater attended. Troutman transferred to Saint Thomas Aquinas after his sophomore year.

Troutman is one of five 2018 recruits currently committed to U of L. The Louisville coaching staff has landed all five commitments from the state of Florida.

Troutman has been playing 7-on-7 with Team Nightmare during the spring. He hasn’t visited Louisville, but plans to take a visit this summer.

Here’s a Q&A with Troutman:

Cardinal Authority: What was it that set Louisville apart from other schools and made you commit in the early recruiting season?

Troutman: “Louisville was one of the top schools that was recruiting me the hardest. That’s what pushed me to a commitment.”

CA: What did you know about Louisville before being recruited by U of L?

Troutman: “Before getting recruited by Louisville, I knew all about the winning program and the relationship with the NFL that the university has.”

CA: You started your high school career at Miami Northwestern, where Teddy Bridgewater attended. What is your relationship with him like and did that play any role in your decision?

Troutman:“Seeing Teddy go through the university and seeing where it has put him plays a big role in my commitment. I have a good relationship with him. I have known Teddy from when I was playing Optimist (youth football).”

CA: How firm is your commitment to Louisville?

Troutman: “I’m fully committed to the university.”

CA: Louisville has had success recruiting athletes out of south Florida. What is it that attracts south Florida players to Louisville?

Troutman: “The thing that attracts us the most about the university is going against your home team, Miami.”

CA: What do you know about the other Florida commits for Louisville’s 2018 recruiting class? Have you talked with any of them?

Troutman: “The only Louisville commit I know is Akeem Hayes. We plan on taking over the Bird Nest together.”

CA: Have you visited Louisville yet?

Troutman: “I have not visited the facility yet, but I plan on visiting this summer.”

CA: Do you have other visits scheduled?

Troutman: “I’m taking a college tour in the summer to multiple schools.”

CA: Which other teams do you have offers from?

Troutman: “Syracuse, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, UAB, Cincinnati, Toledo, FAU, and a few other schools.”

CA: What have coach Dennison and coach Petrino told you about how they see you fitting into the roster and what you need to work on most before college?

Troutman: “They say I need to work on my speed. Also that I can come in as a true freshman.”

CA: What have you been up to in the off season? What have you been working on to prepare for college football?

Troutman: “I been working on my speed, and my man-covering.”

CA: Talk a little bit about your play style and what you hope to bring to Louisville.

Troutman: “I would like to play free safety. I'm going to bring that dog to the ‘Ville.”
