Nwora already losing weight

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino said recently that incoming freshman Jordan Nwora came to campus last month with a high number on his body fat reading.

"I'm not going to say what it is, I don't want to embarrass him," Pitino said with a smile.

But on Monday night, Pitino told Terry Meiners on WHAS-840 that Nwora has already lost nine pounds and is well on his way to getting his body where the staff wants it to be for the season.

"When you go from that high to where we are going to get him, that's going to really help his athleticism," Pitino said. "He's already a good basketball player, so that's going to help him a lot."

Pitino said Nwora has been meeting with the nutritionist and has already been doing a good job.

"She gives him a diet of obviously staying away from all the bad foods," Pitino said. "But more important than the loss of weight is to develop muscle by eating the right foods and lifting the right weights.

"That's when Ray Ganong takes over and you now how sick that individual is."

Cards will meet Memphis in Gotham Classic

U of L will face Memphis in the showcase game of the Fifth Annual Gotham Classic on Saturday, Dec. 16 at noon ET in New York's Madison Square Garden. The event is a five-team, round-robin event.

The meeting will be the 90th all-time between the rivals with the Cardinals leading the series 53-36. The two teams haven't played since Louisville joined the ACC in 2014 but Rick Pitino has said it's a series he wanted to get going again in the future.

Memphis is now coached by former Pitino assistant Tubby Smith. Pitino is 7-5 all-time against Smith.

Tickets for the Louisville-Memphis matchup will go on sale Thursday, June 8 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 866-448-7849. U of L season ticket holders will be notified soon of special opportunities to purchase tickets through the school.

Joining the Cardinals and Tigers in the 2017 Gotham Classic are Albany, Bryant and Siena. U of L and Memphis will each play home games against those three teams in addition to playing each other at Madison Square Garden.

U of L will host Siena on Dec. 6, Bryant on Dec. 11 and Albany on Dec. 20.
