And despite showing flashes of brilliance, Dartez never seemed to consistently put together solid efforts every night out.
But so far this preseason, some close to the program say the 6'10 forward has looked good and could be ready for a breakout senior season. And Dartez says he focused on listening to Coach Pitino and improving his game.
"They've been going good," Dartez said of individual instruction drills. "Just listening to what coach has been saying is the main thing to do. If I do that everything should be good."
What will be the biggest difference fans will notice about Dartez this season?
"Well I'm just going to work harder and try to do whatever I can to help the team," Dartez said.
And with a year of learning Pitino's uptempo system under his belt, Dartez says he's much more comfortable this season and understands what's expected of him this season.
"I feel more comfortable," Dartez said. "I know the system better than I did last year and it's not as hard as it was last year. Last year I was trying to work hard to impress Coach but now I know what he's expecting from me."
