Diakite, who has been forced to sit out Louisville's first two exhibition games and the season opener against Iowa because of clearing house issues, could immediately help the Cardinals interior game.
"I think this will be resolved shortly," Pitino said of Diakite's status. "Not for the Western game but I think he'll be back in the very near future. I think it's almost all cleared up now. We're just not ready [to play him] for the Western game but I think we'll hear something by the end of this week and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's it for the Holy Cross game."
Pitino said that Diakite's situation wasn't expected or anticipated but said university officials were acting in the best interest of the school and the program.
"I did not know any of this," Pitino said of Diakite's situation. "The university's doing the prudent thing. It's certainly hurt us. He would have made a difference but we can't use that as an excuse."
