The 2003 high school football season came to an end on Saturday afternoon at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium when Trinity defeated St. X 17-14 in the Class 4A Championship.

With players such as Brian Brohm of Trinity and Sean Sester of Highlands well known to most that following Kentucky high school football and recruiting, we turned our eyes towards the underclassmen.

Alex Reid, DL
6'2, 245, Junior
St. Xavier High School
Plays on both sides of the ball, but looks more impressive on the defensive line. Has decent size and speed. Needs to add weight during the off season.

Chris Todd, QB
6'3, 190, Junior
Elizabethtown High School
Somewhat of an unknown name throughout the state is E-town quarterback Chris Todd. That will change quickly next fall. Todd threw for 4,583 yards and 51 touchdowns this fall, completing 64% of his passes. A 2nd Team All-State selection this season, Todd has already been contacted by Louisville, Florida State, Kentucky, Tennessee and many others. He's likely the early leader for Kentucky's Mr. Football in 2004.

Zipp Duncan, TE
6'4, 235, Junior
Elizabethtown High School
Duncan had 60 catches for over 700 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Has great size and speed. Could project as a defensive end on the collegiate level.

A.J. French, WR/DB
5'10, 200, Junior
Elizabethtown High School
French had 57 receptions for 946 yards and 13 TDs as a junior. Great speed and elusiveness at the receiver spot. Also exhibited great coverage skills at defensive back.

Brandon Deadrick, DL
6'4, 230, Junior
Elizabethtown High School
2nd Team All-State selection this year. Has great speed for a lineman and has a nose for the football. Doesn't stop until the play is finished, often making tackles from behind. Has already received interest from a number of regional programs, including Louisville and Kentucky.

Isaac Scherrer, LB
6'1, 195, Junior
Ft. Thomas Highlands High School
Hard hitting linebacker, with great speed. Needs to add some weight prior to his senior season, but should attract attention from regional programs.

Jordan Nevels, DB 5'11, 170, Junior
Ft. Thomas Highlands High School
All-State honorable mention as a junior. Great speed and closes well on opposing receivers.

Other juniors from around the state to keep an eye on for 2004:

  • Earl Heyman: Louisville Ballard defensive lineman that was a 1st Team All-State choice this season.
  • Michael Schwindel: 6'3, 190-pound defensive back at Hancock County.
  • Steve Garr: 6'2, 175-pound receiver at Louisville Male who saw limited action to due an injury early in the season. Has already received interest from Louisville.
  • Ryan Phillips: Wide receiver/defensive back at Oldham County. Has impressive size and deceptive speed.
  • Maurice Urrutia: Younger brother of Mario Urrutia. Tall receiver with great hands and speed at Louisville Fern Creek.
  • Trey Murphy: Louisville Eastern offensive lineman with great size at 6'3, 300-pounds.
