Saturday afternoon's contest between Louisville and Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference turned into a game of offensive spurts, with the Cardinals using a 14-4 burst early in the second half to open a 19-point lead. Following a 14-4 run by Austin Peay, the Cardinals responded with a 11-3 run to close out the game with a 80-63 win.

The Cardinals, who were playing for the first since their 73-65 win over Florida last Saturday, appeared to come out flat and fell behind early 6-0.

Two and half minutes into the game, Larry O'Bannon, on a layup, put Louisville on the scoreboard. After a Luke Whitehead dunk, Francisco Garcia scored seven consecutive points to push the Cardinals ahead at 11-7. Garcia led all scorers with 21 points

The teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes as Louisville held a 20-16 lead midway through the first half.

The Cardinals would then use strong rebounding, tight defense and balanced scoring to spark an 11-3 run and build a 33-19 lead, which led to a 42-30 halftime deficit for Austin Peay.

Austin Peay's Anthony Davis and Adrian Henning opened the second half of play connecting on back-to-back three-pointers, bringing the Governors with six, but Louisville answered with a 14-4 burst to take control of the game at 58-40.

After opening their largest lead of the game at 65-46 with 10:59 remaining in the game, the Cardinals would struggle defensively over the next six minutes as Austin Peay was able to close the gap to just nine at 69-60.

"We broke down defensively when we got the big lead," explained Garcia. "We laid back. Coach told us to keep working, keep playing hard."

The Governors would only muster three additional points for the remainder of the contest, as Louisville's defensive pressure picked up. The Cardinals closed with an 11-3 run to secure the 80-63 victory.

"We played great defense," said Coach Rick Pitino. "When you play against a team with juniors and seniors, the press is not going to make them quit. We knew that they would keep fighting and you saw that at the end. We played good basketball and hard-nosed defense, but they are a good basketball team as well."

The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday against the Virginia Military Institute at Freedom Hall, before heading to Lexington to face the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats.

NOTES:

  • The game was played as a fundraiser for former Cardinal great Marques Maybin's medical costs.

  • Louisville, which entered the game second in the nation in blocks per game with an average of 8.6, blocked nine shots on the afternoon. The team now has 52 blocks on the young season.
  • Francisco Garcia tied his career-high with 8 assists.
