After trading baskets and having eight early lead exchanges, 10th-ranked Louisville took the lead for good when Larry O'Bannon connected with Otis George for a layup and started a 8-0 run, giving the Cardinals an early 17-10 advantage. Moments later the Cardinals exploded for a 22-4 spurt, which included a string of five consecutive three-point baskets to build a 39-19 halftime lead.

Following a 10-0 run to close the first half, the Cardinals scored the initial 10 points of the second, building a 30 point lead and cruised to a 76-42 victory.

"This was obviously a good win for us…opening league play," said Coach Rick Pitino. "Any time get a league win you have to be very pleased."

The Cardinals utilized a balanced scoring attack throughout the first half, as no players scored in double figures in the opening frame. Taquan Dean led all scorers with eight, while Otis George added six, along with seven rebounds. As a team, the Cardinals shot 59% from the field, including 50% from behind the three-point arc, while Southern Miss was only able to connect on 28% of their first half shots.

The second half was simply more of the same. The Golden Eagles poor shooting continued as they were unable to score their first points of the second half in over five and a half minutes.

"We played really good defense," continued Pitino. "I can't find any fault in our defense."

The 19,319 on hand were able to watch all of the Cardinals get plenty of action, as Coach Pitino played the reserves for the majority of the second half.

The play of the game occurred when freshman point guard Brad Gianiny drove the length of the floor, penetrated the lane and dished to Joshua Tinch who dunked the Cards ahead 73-41 with less than a minute to play.

Otis George continued his improved play and finished the game with career-high tying 10 rebounds, to go along with 6 points, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

"It feels good," George said about his work on the backboards. "I just to hustle and use all my energy out there."

Nate Daniels led all scorers with 15 and was only one of two Cardinals to finish in double figures.

"We kept moving the ball and got a lot points off of transition," said Daniels. "I think we are all coming together. Everybody is getting to their spots and Francisco and Taquan are doing a great job of penetrating and kicking the ball out."

Louisville will now embark on a two-game road trip, visiting conference foes South Florida on Saturday and then East Carolina next Thursday, which will be televised nationally on espn2.

"We have a couple of very difficult road games coming up," Pitino said. "I don't know what South Florida is like, but everybody that has been there tells me that it is a very difficult place to play and we all know East Carolina is."
