Rick Pitino Quotes

"We beat a great basketball team tonight. The great respect we had led to this play. You have to have great spacing against their press. They had an off night like us last year (in Cincinnati). We did a good job eliminating the three and we didn't turn it over. I am real proud of our guys and especially Taquan (Dean). This kid should have never played tonight and he's the toughest son of a gun I've ever coached."

"The big thing was we had to deny the ball to the high post. We limited them to one shot. They have a second offense and that's getting to the backboard.

"Luke (Whitehead) did a great job but it's a team effort. If you stop the three, you have to give up a little inside. I have to tell you this is one of the big things and I say this all the time, they didn't make their free throws. They missed them and we made a high percentage most of the night."

"I am so shocked. We have real good personnel and you go one-by-one you wouldn't be impressed but when you put them together, it's great. (Alhaji) Mohammed is a two-year walk-on, Otis (George) was a non-player and (Brandon) Jenkins is a freshman. I've had a few teams like that."

(on the team) "They have great pride and character. I can't explain it. If you were with me the first six weeks in practice, I thought I overscheduled. We got together and said we weren't very good and we wanted to see how we could fix that. We knew we could shoot but our post game was limited. We were not a good back-to-the-basket team but it's cuts, taking it to the goal that we do well."

(on if he thought it was going to be a close game) "I thought it was going to be close up in Cincinnati last year but we got blown out and I watched most of the game from the locker room. You always expect (a close game) and because of our respect for them, we never let up. We didn't turn the ball over and they are good defensive team."

(on Taquan Dean's injury) "He got hurt in the shootaround. Not a whole lot you can do but rest. We worked on him all afternoon. There are little point guard things he's learning everyday. He's mentally tough and he's become a terrific point guard and I'm very proud of him."

Cincinnati Coach Bob Huggins

"I've never gotten beat like that. We didn't play. I took three time outs just to get guys in the right spots. That's not their fault; it's my fault. People get complacent; it's human nature. You can tell them but they don't listen."

"They played harder than we did to start the game. They got a lot of loose balls early and we didn't even come close to getting one which means they were into it more than we were. It's 44-40 at halftime and we didn't shoot well and we weren't shooting well from the free throw line. We had to have patience and the frustrating thing was it wasn't their pressure. We didn't run any offense. We didn't do what we were supposed to. Luke (Whitehead) destroyed us. He plays so hard. I told our guys that he plays the game harder than I anyone I've seen in a long time. He did everything and was terrific. They did a much better job than we did and they did a good job preparing for our press."

"Things have been too easy for us. We got a little giddy and I've tried to explain to them that our half-court offense hasn't been that good. They thought I was just being my grumpy self. This is embarrassing and I'm embarrassed. They played hard the whole game. We decided with 25 seconds left to just throw them the ball to give them two easy dunks."

"We had four or five possessions in a row and we took it and try to run it through five guys. They're not Corey Dillon. Just pass the ball. We had no ball movement whatsoever. You have to have movement and spacing and we had none of that. It's my fault; I have to fix it. Rick's done a great job with his offense and teaching spacing. I'd like to send a couple guys down here for a day to teach them something. I'm looking forward to them coming to Cincinnati. My players might be scared to death but I'm looking forward to it."
