Theus, who was tabbed last summer to replace Mick Cronin on Rick Pitino's staff, is a former Rebel standout and NBA great. He led the Las Vegas school to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1977 under Jerry Tarkanian.
UNLV Athletic Director Mike Hambrick was quoted in the Review-Journal as looking for a candidate with coaching experience at the highest level of division one who can energize both the program and its fan base.
"Energy is an issue," Hamrick told the Review-Journal. "Not so much age, but energy. We need somebody to energize the program."
Commentary: There's no question Theus will make a great head coach in the very near future and certainly brings the necessary ingredients to energize any program, particularly that of his alma mater. While he's excelled on both the hardwood and on television, Theus now is one of the rising stars in the coaching world. He'd be a great addition to any program!
