Breaking News: Gillhamer departs, Cassity promoted

Mike Cassity was introduced as the Cardinals defensive coordinator this afternoon.

Recently hired Mike Cassity has been promoted from safties coach to defensive coordinator following the recent departure of Mike Gillhamer. Gillhamer will be taking a position as a defensive assistant in the secondary for the Carolina Panthers.

"I've got a lot of confidence in Mike Cassity," U of L head coach Bobby Petrino said. "I've known him for a lot of years and I really like his style. I think he'll give our defense confidence."

Cassity has extensive coaching experience, including being a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and most recently Illinois.

"I'm extremely excited to be a part of the Louisville football family," Cassity said.

Cassity believes in an attacking defensive style, but that wasn't always the case.

"I've evolved from a bend but don't break philosophy to more of an attacking style," Cassity explained.

He has 28 years of coaching experience, including stops at Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, East Carolina and Kentucky.

He's a native of Fort Campbell, Kentucky and a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and the University of Kentucky.

Director of football operations, Tony Levine, will also return to the field and along with Coach Reggie Johnson, and will coach the linebackers.

Inside the Ville will have more on this staff change soon.
