Complete news and notes from Friday's controlled scrimmage.
The decision to move the scrimmage to Friday afternoon was a stroke of genius. The weather was near perfect...kind of felt like fall.
Remember all of the talk about how the defense has been dominated all spring since the start of spring? Well, that wasn't the case on Friday afternoon. It was a practice session full of hard hits, pass deflections, sacks, interceptions and tackles for loss.
Let's talk about some of the standout players on the defensive side of the ball...defensive tackle Montavious Stanley played very well and made a statement on the first running play of the afternoon, stopping Eric Shelton in the backfield for a loss...defensive end Marcus Jones recorded a sack...safety Kerry Rhodes continued his impressive play, making two difficult pass deflections and recording two tackles for a loss...with the offense facing a 1st & Goal from the one yard line, defensive end Elvis Dumervil sacked Stefan LeFors for an 8-yard loss...linebackers Willie Johnson, Preston Smith & Brandon Johnson all recorded interceptions, two of which would have been returned for scores...Brandon Johnson also recorded a sack.
Now for the offense...quarterback Stefan LeFors had a great scrimmage, including deep completions to Joshua Tinch and J.R. Russell...redshirt freshman running back Reggie Bradshaw had the best performance out of the backfield...receiver Tiger Jones had two nice receptions and both times punished the opposing defensive backs when they attempted to force him out of bounds...I can't forsee any one defender bringing down receiver Montrell Jones in the open field.
Tyrone Saterfield sighting. Saterfield, who is sitting out the spring practice session to focus on class work attended the Cardinals practice for the first time this spring. Saterfield continues to lift weights, attend team meetings and anticipates returning in the fall.
Not too much to report regarding injuries, however, there were a few stingers that may slow down a couple guys during Saturday's practice. Both Robert McCune and Jason Spitz were slow to rise after a helmet to helmet hit during a run play...Kerry Rhodes stayed on the turf for a few minutes with a ankle injury, but was able to walk it off...Brandon Johnson also suffered an ankle injury and limped off the field at the end of practice.
Most entertaining overheard comment of the day:
Assistant Coach: Hey, J.R., aren't you the number one receiver (in that formation)?
J.R. Russell: You know I'm always the #1 receiver!
Deriontae Taylor has seen his participation increase since moving to fullback. In addition to his blocking duties, he has recorded a couple carries and pass receptions.
