Cards battling rival for talented QB

The offers are piling up for quarterback Jonathan Garner and the Cardinals find themselves going against a longtime rival, among others, for the rising prospect.

One of the top prospects in the Sunshine State, as well as one of the top quarterback prospects in the county, Mainland High School's Jonathan Garner is piling up the offers.

The reason for such high interest?

His size (6'5, 210) alone demands attention, but so does his strong left arm. Over the past two seasons Garner tossed for more than 3,000 yards and was named All-State honorable mention last fall after helping guide Mainland to the 5A State Title.

During his visit to Mississippi for its Senior Day camp, Garner picked up an offer from the Rebels and upon his return home found two more offers.

"Ole Miss offered while I was at their camp," Garner said. "When I came home I had offers from East Carolina and Connecticut too."

He also currently holds scholarship offers from Memphis, Stanford, Louisville and South Florida.

"I'm pretty wide open, but Stanford, Ole Miss and Memphis are my top three right now," Garner told Inside the Ville.

"We're originally from the Memphis area and both of his parents graduated from Memphis," said Jonathan's mother Candy Garner. "It felt weird visiting Ole Miss and getting offers from them and Louisville."

With the Tigers being rivals with the Cardinals and Rebels, do the two programs stand a chance to land Jonathan?

"Well, I don't say anything nice about them," his mother jokingly continued.

"It doesn't really matter to me," Jonathan added later.

Garner also mentioned Miami, Tennessee and Georgia as others he will strongly consider. Over the coming weeks he will have an opportunity to get closer looks at more programs, as well as likely pick up additional offers.

Garner is headed to camps at Miami, Tennessee, Stanford, Georgia and LSU, as well as the Elite 11 Camp in Las Vegas, during the summer weeks.
