Martez Walker prepared for next step

6-foot-5 guard Martez Walker, one of the top prospects in the class of 2008, is prepared to begin his high school career later this month at Birmingham's Central Park Christian.

Following a hoops filled summer, 6-foot-5 Martez Walker is set to begin high school later this month at Central Park Christian in Birmingham, Alabama.

Walker, who showed promise at the Reebok ABCD Camp in early July, then earned All-Tournament honors at the Reebok Big Time in Las Vegas late last month, will team with 6-foot-10 forward Jonathan Huffman, and 6-foot-8 power forward Carl Swanigan. Huffman, who is being recruited by the University of Louisville and others, and Swanigan, a former U of L prospect before deciding to cast his lot with Mississippi, should form an impressive trio with Walker on the perimeter.

And while hoops was a major focus for Walker this summer, he also found time to hit the books.

"He's been reading books during the off-season just to prepare for the start of school," Larry Walker said Saturday. "He enjoys reading and he's been making good progress with a couple of the books."

Of note, Walker teamed with junior point guard Dwain Williams, at the Big Time. Williams, who also attended the University of Louisville basketball camp in June, pumped in 47 points in one game in Las Vegas while also earning All-Tournament honors. Williams will be headed to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida later this month where he'll team with current Cardinal commit Lamar Roberson.

And while Walker will spend the school year in central Alabama, his father said his heart won't be far from Louisville.

"He'll be back at Louisville's camp next summer and he's already looking forward to that," Larry Walker said.
