"It was our first test this year against the best in the nation," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "Pepperdine is a great team and it was great to see our team leaders make this win happen. Jennifer Craven, Jennifer Hoffman and Bing Sun willed this team to a win."
U of L won 28-30, 33-31, 30-28, 30-19 to improve its record to 5-0. Pepperdine fell to 1-2.
Craven, the Cardinals' junior setter, had been hampered by a hip injury causing her to miss much of last weekend's action. She had 38 assists and seven digs. Hoffman was one of five Cardinals in double digit kills in Louisville's multipronged offense. The junior from Chicago had 10 kills, no errors on 18 swings.
"Hoffman's blocking was unbelievable," said Yelin.
Freshman Svetlana Dukule had 12 kills, two aces, and 13 digs with Sophomore Ana Yartseva adding 13 kills and 12 digs to the win. Junior Lena Ustymenko had 10 kills and two aces. Pepperdine was led by Sophia Milo and Katy Daly, both of whom notched 19 kills.
U of L held Pepperdine to just .210 hitting, while hitting .276 as a team. Pepperdine committed 10 service errors and were outblocked 15.5 to 5.
"This was a battle. Every point we had to fight for," said Yelin. "I can't stress how good of a team Pepperdine is."
