Monday Morning Quarterback

Inside The Ville's Monday Morning Quarterback, Ethan Moore, takes a look back at the University of Louisville's impressive homecoming victory against East Carolina last weekend.

The Cards continued their string of impressive offensive numbers: 59 points and 549 total yards against the sunken Pirates of East Carolina. Eric Shelton led the way with 129 yards on the ground on just 12 carries ( about 11 yards per carry) to go along with a school-tying record of 5 TDs. Shelton now has scored 8 touches on the season (all within the last two games). The QB tandem of LeFors and Brohm was as effective as ever, with Stefan completing 12 of 14 for 148 yards and Brian throwing 12 of 16 for 186. Each signal-caller threw for a TD, with Brohm's first touchdown pass as a collegiate player to Lionel Gates late in the second half. The Cards have just 4 TD passes this year, which would be a statistic of concern if UofL's rushing attack wasn't so strong.

J.R. Russell continued his streak of games catching a pass to 28 while hauling in 7 for 101 yards and a score. For the second consecutive week, Montrell Jones was the second leading receiver for the Cards, snaring 4 catches for 49 yards. Michael Bush added another score on the ground after Shelton's field day, making it 42-7. HURRICANE WATCH: Going into October 14th's showdown against Miami, the Cards will be glad to have Lionel Gates back at full strength. Gates, who rushed twice for 11 yards was used sparingly so he could heal for the big game.

This Cardinal Committee also had an impressive stat line for this game: 7 points, 253 total yards and collected 5 turnovers. UofL limited the ship-wrecked Pirates to only 53 yards on the ground. The Cardinal "D", led by Brandon Johnson looked as if they were camped out the ECU backfield, spending most of their time knocking ECU QB James Pinkney black and blue. Those hits didn't register how big they really were until Pinkney opened his mouth during the post-game media blitz. The Sharp brothers, Antione and Brandon each had an interception in the second stanza of play.

An important position breakdown in the Cards-Canes game should be UofL's D-Line against UM's O-Line. Amobi Okoye also sat this one out so he could rest up his bruised shoulder. The UofL secondary needs to have better coverage on the opponent's receiving core. There were many instances where the Pirates were open, including the wide-open ECU receiver Sean Harmon who caught the 20-yard TD pass for ECU's only score.

Brent Moody punted only 3 times for a 37 yard average. Montrell Jones added a nice 57 yard punt return that set up one of Shelton's 5 TDs on the day. Punt and kick-off coverages were solid, not allowing any big gains. Kicker Art Carmody missed a 39 yard FG and connected on a 42 yarder. Carmody is 4 out of 6 on the year on Field Goals.
