Cards add BYU-Hawaii; Current gets scholarship

The University of Louisville men's basketball team has added BYU-Hawaii to this seasons schedule. Sophomore guard Chris Current has also been awarded a scholarship for the upcoming season.

The University of Louisville has added Brigham Young University Hawaii to its men's basketball schedule on Nov. 20, the Cardinals first game of the 2004-05 season. The event will tip off at 5:30 p.m. EST (12:30 p.m. Hawaii time).

Located in Laie, Hawai'i on the island of Oahu, BYU Hawaii is ranked 20th in the current NCAA Division II Bulletin poll. The Seasiders return four starters from the last season's 23-6 squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA II Regionals. The Seasiders posted a 14-1 record at home last season in the 5,600-seat Cannon Activities Center. All four BYUH returning starters averaged in double figures in scoring last year, led by Pacific West Conference Player of the Year Jake Chrisman's 23.3 points per game. BYU Hawaii opens its season on Nov. 5 in Provo, Utah against BYU Provo. Tickets are available to the game by calling 808-293-3764.

The Cardinals will travel to Maui, Hawai'i on Nov. 18, making the short flight from there to Oahu on game day to play the Seasiders. On U of L's last visit to Hawai'i, the Cardinals opened the 2000-01 season at the University of Hawai'i before playing in the Maui Invitational.

U of L will face Iowa on Nov. 22 in the 21st Annual EA Sports Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Lahaina Civic Center on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Other first-round matchups, all of which are televised by ESPN2, include host Chaminade against Texas, BYU vs. North Carolina, and Stanford against Tennessee. U of L will face either Chaminade or Texas in the second round of the event on Nov. 23 with the final round being played on Nov. 24. ESPN and ESPN2 will also televise selected second and third round games.

Two Late-Season Game Times Altered The starting times of the Cardinals' final two regular season games have been changed since the schedule was intially released. U of L's final home game in Freedom Hall against Charlotte on March 3 has been moved to a 7 p.m. start and will be televised by ESPN2. The Cards' regular season finale at DePaul will now start at noon for the ESPN telecast. The change was forced due to the availability of AllState Arena, DePaul's home court.

Current Earns Scholarship for the Season

U of L sophomore guard Chris Current has been placed on scholarship. The 6-4 Frankfort (Ky.) High School product appeared in a limited role in eight games last season. Current is the second former walk-on to earn a scholarship this fall, joining sophomore guard Brad Gianiny. U of L had entered the year with 11 scholarship players including sophomore David Padgett, who must sit out this season after transferring from Kansas.

Cards, Texas Only Multiple Top 25

Louisville and Texas are the only two schools with their men's basketball, football and women's volleyball teams currently ranked in the nation's Top 25 teams. Rick Pitino's Cardinals are 13th in the ESPN/USA Today preseason poll while the U of L football team (14th AP, 16th ESPN/USAT) and volleyball teams (23rd USA Today/CSTV) are also in the top 25. U of L, Texas and Oklahoma State both have football and men's basketball teams in the nation's top 25.
