Is P Gabe Mullane Brent Moody's replacement?

When Brent Moody transferred to Florida State following Louisville's 11-1 2004 campaign, the Cardinals had a glaring need at punter. And Gabe Mullane, a 6-2, 170-pound punter from Jackson High School in Massillon, Ohio, could be the replacement Louisville coach Bobby Petrino was looking for.

Gabe Mullane, a 6-2, 170-pound punter from Jackson High in Massillon, Ohio, will walk-on at the University of Louisville this fall.

"Gabe has accepted a walk-on invitation from the University of Louisville," Patricia Mullane informed Inside The Ville Thursday morning.

Mullane, an Associated Press second team Division I All-State selection in 2004, could step in immediately and claim the starting spot vacated by punter Brent Moody. Moody, a two-year starter, transferred to Florida State following the Cardinals 11-1 season.

"He's a fairly athletic kid who can jump up and grab a (bad snap)," Jackson assistant coach Al Checca said. "But he can really boom it. There's no question about it."

Besides Louisville, ACC Champion Virginia Tech and perennial Big Ten power Iowa showed considerable interest in Mullane.

"Virginia Tech flew him down for a visit but they went with another kid," said Checca. "And he went to Iowa. But like a lot of places, they just don't give scholarships to punters but once every couple years."

Jackson finished 7-3 last season and made the state playoffs.
