Brohm, Tinch star in Spring Game

Sophomore quarterback Brian Brohm threw for 390 yards and six touchdowns as the Red beat the White 49-14 in the University of Louisville's annual Spring Game Friday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

Neither severe thunderstorms nor a thirty-minute rain delay could slow down Brian Brohm and the University of Louisville offense Friday night at the annual Red-White Spring Game.

Bad weather postponed the game, scheduled for a 7:30 kickoff, thirty-six minutes. But despite the wet conditions, Brohm was on target early and often against the Cardinals' No. 2 (White) defense. The Red Team, led by the 6-4 sophomore from Louisville Trinity, scored on each of their six first half possessions.

Junior running back Michael Bush had the scrimmage's first score, a 5-yard rushing touchdown on fourth and one 4:35 into the contest. While Brohm connected with 6-3 Joshua Tinch twice on the opening drive, it was Bush who carried the load, rushing 7 times for 36 yards.

On the Red's second possession, Brohm hooked up with Tinch for an 8-yard touchdown on third and goal. The drive covered 87 yards in 11 plays, and took just 3:44.

Later in the first half, Brohm found Mario Urrutia, and Broderick Clark, respectively, for touchdowns. The strike to Urrutia, covering 10 yards, put the Red Team ahead 28-0 with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter. Clark then took a short Brohm pass 43 yards for a touchdown, and a 35-0 lead four minutes into the second quarter.

Tinch caught 6 passes for 133 yards
and three touchdowns.

After a defensive stop by the Red, Brohm connected with Tinch again, this time for a 53-yard touchdown with 5:46 remaining in the half. On that drive, Brohm led the first team 85 yards – on four plays – in just 1:24.

The White team finally got on the scoreboard with 3:49 left in the first half when 6-5 Hunter Cantwell connected with Elijah Daniel from 21 yards out.

Just two-minutes later, however, Brohm's touchdown pass to Montrell Jones in the corner of the end zone just before halftime gave the Red Team a 42-7 lead at the break.

Brohm completed 20-24 passes for 340 yards and 5 touchdowns in the first half, while Bush controlled things on the ground, rushing for 72 yards on 15 carries. Clark had 103 receiving yards on four catches in the first half, while Tinch had 97 yards yards on 6 catches.

In a time shortened second half – eight-minute quarters – each team scored once. Sergio Spencer scored from four yards out with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Red's lead to 42-14. The scoring ended when Brohm found Tinch for a 36 yard touchdown, and a 49-14 edge. The touchdown was Brohm's sixth, and final, of the game. It was also Tinch's third score of the night.

For the game, Brohm completed 23-29 passes for 390 yards and six touchdowns. Michael Bush carried 19 times for a game-high 92 yards, while Kolby Smith gained 56 yards on just six carries. Also for the Red team, Tinch and Clark each had more than 100 receiving yards.

Red team defensive end Elvis Dumervil had an outstanding night, recording 3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss, and five tackles. End Chad Rimpsey, and tackle Amobi Okoye each had one sack. Linebacker Brandon Johnson had a game-high 6 tackles.
