Cardinal Softball wins C-USA Regular Season Title

The University of Louisville softball team clinched its first Conference USA regular season title with a 4-0 win over host and 25th ranked DePaul Sunday. U of L closes out the regular season with a 40-16 record and a No. 1 seed in the league tournament May 12-14 in Tampa.

"I am extremely proud of this team and what they have accomplished this season," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I'm also proud of Aja Sherman for hanging in there today and holding her own in a tough situation."

The Cardinals took an early lead in the second inning when Sara Bausher and Sarah Totten reached on back-to-back Blue Demon errors. Bausher came home when Lisa Estes reached on another error. Audrey Rendon recorded the first hit of the game, scoring Totten to give Louisville the 2-0 lead.

U of L added another run in the third when Michelle Vasquez reached safely on a fielder's choice and took second on an error on the play. Bausher's double sent Vasquez home to make it a 3-0 game.

DePaul threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Linda Secka reached on an infield single, Marcy Willus hit into a fielder's choice and Jenny Doezie was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Louisville starter Aja Sherman got the next batter to line into a double play to end the inning.

The Blue Demons had another chance to score in the sixth when they had runners at first and third with one out, but Sherman got the next batter to fly out and struck out the final batter to end the threat.

The Cards put up another run in the top of the seventh whenAudrey Rendon singled, stole second, moved to third when Candi Hicks reached safely on a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on a hit by Courtney Moore to give Louisville a 4-0 lead. Louisville had an opportunity to score more runs when Wood was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. DePaul reliever Megan Huitink delivered two strikeouts to end the inning.

Sherman (20-9)picked up her twelfth shutout of the season, holding DePaul to only two hits and striking out eight in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had seven hits, led by Rendon's 3 for 4, one run, one RBI performance. Wood was 2 for 3 in the game.

DePaul's Tracie Adix (21-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, two of them earned on three hits. The Blue Demons fall to 37-18 (19-5 C-USA).
