Volleyball Announces 2005 Schedule

A new conference, traditional rivals and a challenging tournament schedule are on the slate for the University of Louisville volleyball team, which announced its 2005 schedule today.

Coming off a banner season in 2004 that saw the Cardinals advance to the Sweet Sixteen after sweeping the Conference USA Tournament, Louisville will face 11 schools that advanced to the NCAA Championship last year. The non-conference slate will include a trip to UNLV's Tournament and the Miami (Fla.) Hurricane's tournament. Those will include matchups against Illinois, Long Beach, Michigan State and Sacramento State. The Cardinals will host a Labor Day Invitational with Wake Forest, Ohio, and Tennessee State.

"This is a great schedule with no let ups whatsoever," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "With 11 teams on the schedule which made the NCAA, we will be battle-tested going into the post-season."

In addition to tackling uncharted territory in the inaugural Big East Conference, U of L fans will be treated to traditional rivalries like Kentucky, Tennessee and Xavier. A post Thanksgiving tournament will pit Louisville versus Rice and Georgia.

The Cardinals return nine letterwinners and five starters. The Cards will be without standout Bing Sun as well as the loss of libero, Candace Cogan. However, All-American Ana Yartseva, and All-Midwest Region selections Jennifer Hoffman, Lena Ustymenko also return. Hoffman is currently training with the USA National Team and will start against China on the left side in Switzerland tonight.
