Caracter not rushing into decision

Though Derrick Caracter's focus is clearly on playing his best basketball this summer, the 6-foot-9 mega-talent from Elizabeth, New Jersey recently took some initial steps along the path toward choosing a college, visiting both Memphis and Louisville unofficially. Inside The Ville has the latest on Caracter's recruitment.

Derrick Caracter, a 6-foot-9, 285-pound mega-talent from Elizabeth, New Jersey, isn't in a hurry to make a college decision.

Instead, Caracter has decided to focus his energy and attention on playing his best hoops next month during the all-important summer evaluation period when college coaches will be watching intently from courtside.

"He's not in a rush to make any decision right now," said Eddie Lau, who is helping guide Caracter through the recruiting process. "Right now, he's just checking out schools, going through the [recruiting] process, and focusing on improving his game."

And though Caracter's focus is on the court for now, he recently took some initial steps along the path toward choosing a college, visiting both Memphis and Louisville unofficially. A week after visiting John Calipari's Tiger program, Caracter attended Rick Pitino's summer basketball camp in Louisville. Villanova, Virginia and Seton Hall are also under consideration, and, according to Lau, Caracter may visit those three schools unofficially following a busy July schedule that will begin next week in Teaneck, New Jersey at the Reebok ABCD Camp.

"He felt that Louisville being in the Big East and Coach Pitino's track record of developing pro's was (attractive)," said Lau. "Both Pitino and [John] Calipari are great coaches. They both coached in the pros and sent lots of players to the [NBA] from college."

At this point, though, Caracter apparently hasn't acquired enough information during the recruiting process to make a summer-time decision.

"There's no timeframe for making a decision right now," said Lau. "When he's ready and gets that feeling then he'll decide. But he's not in a hurry right now."

Lau said Caracter will likely take his alloted official visits this fall before settling on a college.

"If a school really wants him, they'll be willing to wait for him to make a decision," Lau said.

Caracter is ranked the No. 11 prospect nationally by Scout.com.
