Caracter could pick U of L after weekend visit

Derrick Caracter told Scout.com's Russ Blake this week that he's heavily leaning toward verbally commiting to the University of Louisville, and an unofficial visit to U of L this weekend could seal the deal.

"Yes, he's coming down to Louisville this weekend with his mother," Caracter's grandmother confirmed Thursday evening.

Under NCAA rules, high school prospects can't officially make visits to college campuses when school isn't in session. Since classes haven't yet resumed in New Jersey where Caracter attends, this weekend's visit will be of the unofficial variety - meaning Caracter and his family will pay the bill for the trip.

This also won't be Caracter's first visit to Louisville. Earlier this summer, Caracter paid his own way to attend Rick Pitino's summer basketball camp. After attending Pitino's camp, the 6-9 All-America power forward has listed the Cardinals as his favorite over rival Memphis.

"It's because of Pitino," Caracter told Blake this week.

Should Caracter commit to Louisville this weekend during his unofficial visit, he'd join 6-2 point guard Edgar Sosa from the Bronx and 6-3 shooting guard Jerry Smith from Wauwatosa, WI in the Cardinals 2006 recruiting class.

Louisville is also still recruiting 6-8 Earl Clark from Rahway, New Jersey. Clark, who has narrowed his choices down to Louisville and Villanova, told Blake earlier this week that the Cardinals and Wildcats are "even."

Clark is expected to make an official visit to Louisville in early September before making his decision.
