Prospect Video: QB Chris Smelley

Scout.com 3-star quarterback prospect planning an official visit to Louisville

After throwing for 3,400 yards and 38 touchdowns, while also rushing for an additional five scores as a junior, Tuscaloosa (Ala.) American Christian Academy quarterback Chris Smelley drew the attention of a number of major programs. Now, as a senior, with more than 2,100 yards and 38 touchdowns - versus two interceptions - Smelley has received scholarship offers from Louisville, LSU, Memphis, Ole Miss, Oregon, South Carolina and Tulane.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound quarterback, who is rated among the nation's top 30 signal-callers by Scout.com, has already made an official visit to Ole Miss and is planning a trip to Louisville later this fall.

Smelley has a quick release on the ball and doesn't have to muscle up on a throw to get velocity on it. He has an easy delivery that generates plenty of power, so he doesn't sacrifice accuracy on his throws long throws. Like many of the top quarterbacks in high school these days, Smelley does a lot of his damage from the shotgun formation, but his footwork looks good enough that he should have no trouble getting under center. Smelley is a smart player that makes good decisions, and throws a quick, accurate ball.
