Pitino visits star Jr. forward in San Diego

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino travelled to San Diego, Ca. earlier this week to check out 6-7 junior forward Jamelle Horne. Horne's AAU coach, Etop Udoma, spoke with Inside The Ville about Horne's recruitment and explained why the Cardinals have some catching up to do.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino has obvious interest in Jamelle Horne, an athletic 6-foot-7 forward from San Diego, CA.

Pitino's interest was made abundantly clear earlier this week when he and assistant Marvin Menzies traveled west to check in with Horne and watch him practice at San Diego High School. Horne, who averaged 16.2 points and 10.1 rebounds last season as a sophomore at Hoover High School, transferred to San Diego High during the summer.

U of L, however, will apparently face an up-hill battle in its pursuit of Horne, Scout.com's 12th ranked small forward prospect in the Class of 2007.

"I think he likes Louisville, but they've got some catching up to do with Arizona," Horne's AAU coach Etop Udo-Ema said.

According to Etop Udo-Ema, Arizona offered Horne a scholarship last month. Since then, the Wildcats have climbed to the top of Horne's list. And the Wildcats have plenty of other things working in their favor, including Jarryd Bayless, one of Horne's friends who committed to Arizona last week.

"Arizona is definitely in the lead," Udo-Ema said. "They offered a month ago, and I don't know that Louisville has but I doubt it. He's already made an unofficial visit to Arizona and they are trying to get it done. They're working him as hard as they can. Plus, he's pretty good friends with Jarryd Bayless."

Horne currently has a working list of about 6-8 schools, and he's about to trim that list down. Who will make the cut?

"Arizona for sure," said Udo-Ema. "Then probably Louisville, Georgia Tech and Washington. Those are probably his top four."
