Virginia Tech (10-2), which won the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference, fell 27-22 to Florida State in the ACC Championship played in Jacksonville, Fla. on Dec. 3. The Hokies, which entered that game ranked No. 5 nationally, moved to 12th in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls.
Louisville and Virginia Tech have played six times previously, with the Hokies holding a 2-4 advantage. The Cardinals won the last meeting 21-17 on Oct. 10, 1992 in Louisville.
The schools had two common opponents this season in North Carolina and West Virginia. Louisville downed the Tar Heels 69-14 on Oct. 8 and fell 46-44 in triple overtime at West Virginia on Oct. 15. Virginia Tech beat West Virginia 34-17 on Oct. 1 and was a 30-3 winner over North Carolina on Nov. 26.
Louisville (9-2), in its first season in the BIG EAST Conference (5-2), won its last five straight games, winning 30-20 Connecticut on Dec. 3 in the regular season finale. U of L is ranked 15th in the Associated Press poll, 16th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and 16th in the Harris Interactive Poll.
