Coach Steve Spurrier visited Smelley prior to his official visit to South Carolina.
"The visit was great," Smelley said. "I enjoyed it a lot. I got a chance to hang out with coach Spurrier, and I got to know him real well. I watched a lot of film of the quarterbacks. I saw what they are trying to do with the offense."
USC's Pete Carroll has invited Smelley for an official visit as Smelly said, "It was very interesting to hear about USC wanting me to come out there. To have the top team in the nation recruiting you is pretty cool."
Smelley was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Alabama, and he is the front-runner for Alabama's Mr. Football.
He set four AHSAA records during his senior season. He threw 59 touchdown passes to set the single-season record and set a record of 134 career touchdown passes.
He set a record for passing yards in a single game with 565 against Brantley in the Class 1A semifinals. Smelley completed 220 of 374 passes this season with nine interceptions. He set a state record with 4,120 passing yards, and his career total of 10,385 yards ranks second in AHSAA history.
American Christian Academy had a 39-3 record in the last three years with Smelley at quarterback, including a 13-1 mark this season.
