Football Notebook

News and notes full of potential walk-on's, an upcoming combine at UofL and more...

Vacation's Over
Following some well deserved time off, Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino (sorry, Al Davis) and his staff have returned to their offices at the program's football complex.

Fresh off a stellar recruiting season, the focus now turns to the September 2nd season opener against Kentucky, as well as finding the best prospects in the rising class of high school juniors.

However, before we completely turn our attention to spring ball and '07 recruiting, there are a few news and notes regarding the newest group of Cardinals.

  • California quarterback Matthew Wabby, who drew late interest from the Cardinal coaching staff, continues to strongly consider the opportunity to walk-on at U of L. A scholarship opportunity may still surface from Mississippi State, while walk-on opportunities at Nevada and UCLA are possibilities as well. A baseball scholarship is another strong option for the 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect.
  • Speaking of walk-on quarterbacks, I've heard that South Oldham's Caleb Newton is planning on joining the Cardinals later this year. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Newton threw for over 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior at the Crestwood, Kentucky school.
  • three-star DE/LB commit Elisee Pompilus wasn't on the list of new Cardinal commitments, but the former prep teammate of Breno Giacomini will still join the team this fall. Pompilus, who was named second team All-Western State Conference for his play at defensive end this past fall, will join the team as a walk-on.
  • Another name that surfaced on a few commitment lists for Louisville was running back Marcellus Nelson of West Nassau (Fla.) High School. The 6-foot-1, 250-pound back rushed for over 2,500 yards the past two seasons, but wasn't highly recruited due to academic concerns. Also a strong candidate to play linebacker, Nelson did sign with Louisville, but also signed and will enroll at Gulf Coast Community College.
  • All-State receiver Jimorris Johnson continues to consider walk-on invitations from Kentucky, Louisville and West Virginia. The Louisville Western product, who also holds a scholarship offer from Eastern Kentucky, hopes to make a decision by Tuesday.
  • Evaluation Time
You've likely noticed that the evaluation process for is also well underway, with a number of prospects nationwide receiving their pre-senior season star rating. The process will really take off when once again conducts a number of combines at locations nationwide.

St. X's Victor Anderson will be
among those attending the Louisville combine
After making stops in places such as Auburn, Champaign, Jacksonville, Starkville and Tampa last year, will conduct it's first-ever combine at the U of L football complex on May 20. This first one of significant area interest is March 4 when conducts a combine at Pittsburgh, which will likely draw quarterback Pat Bostick and receiver Jon Ditto - two prospects that already hold scholarship offers from U of L. Be sure to stay tuned to and for complete exclusive coverage.

    It's Football Season
Okay, despite the fact that Steeler fans are still celebrating Pittsburgh's win in the Super Bowl, football season is nearly upon us.

The Cardinals open spring practice on March 28, with the Spring Game slated for Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.
