Cards wrap up first day of spring ball

University of Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino comments on the play of Brian Brohm, Pat Carter and others following the first day of spring practice...

On the opening of spring practice...

"It was fun. I enjoyed being out here. Our players were excited about and I thought they took the field with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm. We did some good things, but we have a lot of things we have to work on and improve on. It was fun to see the new guys in their roles and see how we are going to put the offensive line together. I thought some of the new receivers stood out and did a good job. For the most part we have a long way to go."

On the agressive play of Renardo Foster during line drills...

"The oline and the dline were getting after it a little bit. We do need to be a little cautious of that - the first two days you are in helmets only, so we have to make sure that we take care of our teammates and lineup up the next play. Normally we have done a nice job of that - being able to practice full speed and take care of each other."

On the spirited competition...

"We want enthusiasm, we want a lot of competition. I think that is what spring ball is all about- competing for a spot, competing between offense and defense, but in the same respect understanding that you practice properly and take care of each other."

On Brian Brohm...

"He did good. It was good to see him out here. He got a lot of reps - his arm will probably be tired tomorrow, because I don't know if he has thrown that many balls in a long time. We kept him out of the team work and that will make Hunter [Cantwell] better and Bill Ashburn better. We're working [Pat] Carter a little [at quarterback] - it's kind of hard on him because he's doing both positions. That's difficult because you wonder how he's going to get better at one position."

On how Brian Brohm performed...

"We have to watch the video to see if he was as good as expected, but it was sure good to see him out there. I thought he was sharp, his timing was good. I was surprised how well he dropped consistanly throughout the practice. I kind of felt like he might tail off a little bit in the middle of practice, but he didn't."

On Pat Carter...

"I think he has a lot of potential, but he has a lot to learn because he hasn't done it for awhile. He would give you a little bit of a different look when he's back there."

On Michael Bush...

"We have to figure out the right way to use him and make sure that we give him the ball enough in the first half and keep him fresh in the second half. I think that's a lot on me being able to have the confidence now in Kolby [Smith] staying healthy, in George Stripling and I think Sergio Spencer has got himself into a position to where he can take some snaps. He runs the ball real well. I'm really going to be excited to watch Brock Bolen, because he could play fullback and tailback. He's a little different style and last fall when he got into a couple scrimmages he was hard to tackle, so maybe he'll be the guy that helps us in the second half."
