Future stars descend 'Ville for Derby Classic

Louisville signees Derrick Caracter and Edgar Sosa arrive in Louisville Thursday afternoon for the 2006 adidas Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic. Both Caracter and Sosa will be on display for local fans to see Friday at the Night of the Future Stars and Saturday in the 2006 adidas Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic.

Louisville signees Derrick Caracter and Edgar Sosa arrive in town Thursday afternoon for this weekend's 2006 adidas Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic.

Caracter and Sosa, along with their 2006 all-star teammates, will practice Thursday afternoon at Manual High School. Friday night, both future Louisville Cardinals will participate in the Night of the Future Stars activities at Bellermine University, before making their first appearance at Freedom Hall Saturday night in the adidas Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic.

The 6-9 Caracter is having an outstanding spring. He earned MVP honors at the prestigious Roundball Classic last weekend in Chicago while competing against many of the nation's top prospects, posting 16 points, and 3 rebounds. He also scored 18 points, leading the New York Panthers to the title, while earning MVP honors at the famed CYP Tournament in Portchester, New York.

Sosa, the Cardinals point guard of the future and one of the top players in New York City, led Rice (NY) High School to the New York City CHSAA catholic league title and the New York state title this season. He averaged 16 points and 7 assists, and will also participate in the Jordan Classic later this month. Sosa scored a team-high 15 points in his team's 62-60 win over Christ the King in the CHSAA championship game, and scored 12 points for the Bingo All-Stars in a championship game loss to Caracter and the New York Panthers in the CYP Tournament.

Caracter and Sosa will both play for the Black squad this weekend.

Three University of Kentucky signees – point guard Derrick Jasper, combo guard Jody Meeks, and forward Perry Stevenson - will participate on the White squad. In addition, five McDonald's All-American's – Brook and Robin Lopez (Stanford), Javaris Crittendon (Georgia Tech), Gerald Henderson (Duke), and DJ Augustin (Texas) - will also be on display.
