Edgar Sosa and Derrick Caracter led the Black team on an incredible fourth comeback only to see their squad fall to the White team 118-106 in overtime in the adidas Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic Saturday night in front of 14,072 fans at Freedom Hall.

Trailing 80-66 entering the fourth quarter, Sosa and Caracter led a dramatic comeback in the final period. The 6-9, 280-pound Caracter hit back to back 3's, while Sosa scored on a lay up to cut the White team's margin to 80-74 minutes in the fourth period. Later in the final quarter, Sosa scored seven straight points in the game's final 2 minutes to give the Black a 96-95 advantage, their first lead since before halftime.

Then things got interesting.

With Sosa and Caracter leading an exciting comeback in an otherwise ho-hum game, one referee intervened with a call that changed the outcome. Ahead 99-97 with 1.1 seconds remaining, the Black's Javaris Crittendon was called for a foul on Jodie Meeks away from the ball and some 75 feet away from the basket. Meeks then went to the foul line for a 1-and-1 and hit both free throws to send the game into overtime.

Having spent their energy during the comeback, the Black team fell behind big in the extra period. In the end, the White team simply had more gas in their tanks – and their legs, out-scoring the Black 19-7 in the five minute overtime period.

Sosa was the game's co-leading scorer along with teammate Gerald Henderson. The 6-1, 185-pound point guard scored 17 of his 19 points after halftime. Sosa also had seven rebounds and six assists, including a crowd pleasing alley-oop pass to Gerald Henderson in the second half.

"I was a little nervous when I first came out," admitted Sosa, who made just 1-7 shots from the field in the first half. "The most fans I've ever played in front of was 4,000 and there were a lot more than that here tonight. It was just incredible. After I relaxed and calmed down, I played a pretty good game."

Caracter enjoyed a solid all-around
performance.

Caracter finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds and five blocked shots. He used his perimeter skills and shooting ability to his advantage against the taller White team defenders, taking his game outside to knock down four three-pointers for the game.

"I'm looking forward to suiting up next year as a freshman," Caracter said. "I just wanted to try and go out there and take them off the dribble. I'll be able to do a lot more next year than I did tonight because I'll be 20-25 pounds lighter. And my game will improve over the next two or three months also."

Gerald Henderson received MVP honors for the Black team, while Brook Lopez earned White team MVP honors. Henderson also won the three-point shooting contest. UConn-bound forward Stanley Robinson won the dunk contest.

Brook Lopez scored 15 points for the White team.
