The Cardinals return 9 scholarship players from last season's 21-13 team that lost to South Carolina in the NIT semifinals and will add four scholarship newcomers, bringing the number of scholarship players next season to 13 – the maximum allowed under NCAA rules.
But that's not Pitino's problem.
Besides Pitino's 13 scholarship athletes, the Cardinals also currently have three non-scholarship players on their active roster - senior guards Brad Gianiny and Chris Current, and Cornell transfer Will Scott. Pitino also has extended an invitation to walk-on next season to Middlesboro, KY standout Stuart Miller.
Without any changes, Lousville's roster would include 17 players next season. According to Pitino, that's two too many.
"We're probably going to have to make a cut," Pitino told media members assembled at Huber's for the Cardinal Caravan. "We have 17 guys (on the roster) so we'll probably have to cut one or two guys from the basketball team or put them on a taxi squad. We have 17 guys right now and I only want to carry 15 on the active roster."
Pitino didn't elaborate on which players will be asked to leave.
