Fresh off a title at the iS8 tournament in Queens, New York over the weekend, star Louisville signee Derrick Caracter is now prepared to take the next step in his basketball career. What are Caracter's plans? Scout.com's Mike Sullivan caught up with the 6-9, 285 pound Caracter over the weekend and has the latest.

Fresh off a title at the iS8 tournament in Queens, New York over the weekend, star Louisville signee Derrick Caracter is now prepared to take the step in his basketball career.

In the next two weeks, the 6-foot-9 forward from Elizabeth, New Jersey will head south to his new home in Louisville. Caracter, who helped the New York Panthers capture the iS8 championship over the Bingo All-Stars last Sunday, told Mike Sullivan of the NewYorkInsider.com, that he expects to enroll in classes at U of L in two weeks and begin preparing for the 2006-07 season.

In Saturday's iS8 semifinal against the Playaz, Caracter helped his team to an 80-70 victory, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also blocked five shots in the contest.

And while Caracter didn't shine offensively in the finals on Sunday, Caracter made his presence felt defensively, holding 6-9 Syracuse commit Rick Jackson to just two points.

"Jackson had a rough time scoring on Caracter inside," Sullivan said. "Derrick didn't shoot the ball that much in the final, but he was three of five from the field, had four blocks, and eight rebounds."

According to Sullivan, the Panthers were never challenged in the finals, burying the Bingo All Stars from the opening tap. The Panthers guards, Vernon Teel and Cory Chandler, took charge against the Bingo All Stars, who pulled away for a 92-78 win.

When he arrives in Louisville later this month, Caracter's primary focus will be getting his 285 pound body in the best shape possible for the upcoming season. That might not be as big a challenge as once believed.

"Caracter will need to shed some weight, (but) he looks more fit now than he did a few months back," said Sullivan.

Caracter, a Top 20 prospect, participated in both the Roundball Classic and Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic this spring. He scored 17 points in both games.

Note Edgar Sosa and Earl Clark were both named first team iS8 last weekend.
