Cards cruise past Savannah State

The University of Louisville forced 25 turnovers in it's 71-45 win against visiting Savannah State on Wednesday night

After suffering two consecutive home losses last week, the University of Louisville received 20 points and 8 rebounds from junior forward Juan Palacios on Wednesday night against visiting Savannah State to help guide the Cardinals to an easy 71-45 victory.

"We did a lot of smart things tonight," said Cardinal head coach Rick Pitino. "We kept our turnovers down and pressed very well. We played at a high tempo but didn't score a lot of points. Our defense suffered a little bit when we took our pressure off. But they're a road weary team, I'm sorry for them."

The Cardinals pulled away quickly by converting 15 first half Savannah State turnovers into 23 points and built a 40-18 halftime lead.

Freshman point guard Edgar Sosa scored 12 and sophomore Terrence Williams added 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

After scoring 3 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in ten minutes of action, David Padgett was forced to the sideline following a collision with a Savannah State player.

"I just think he tweaked it (his knee), mild sprain I think he'll be fine by tomorrow," said Pitino. "There was no reason to risk it."

The Cardinals played without freshman center Derek Caracter, who was suspended for a game by head coach Rick Pitino for not following team policy. Caracter is expected to return for the Cardinals next game against Miami, but how much, if any, time that he'll play is still to be determined.

"Yeah, but I don't know if he'll play, but he'll be back. This is not a slight at him, but it's really not a concern to me. I'm more concerned with getting the other guys ready to play against very good competition - and to get ready for the Big East."

The Cardinals will host Miami on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
