Caracter sent home, return unknown

University of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino has sent heralded freshman Derrick Caracter home for the holidays and it is unclear whether he'll return to the team following the break.

University of Louisville heralded freshman Derrick Caracter has been home for the holidays and it is unclear whether he'll return to the team following the break.

"I'm going to give (Derrick Caracter) a little Christmas break and let him go home," said Pitino at his Friday afternoon press conference. "I want him to spend the Christmas holidays with his family and think a little bit."

Caracter shed more than 50 pounds from his 6-foot-9 frame since his arrival at U of L and has seen limited action through the Cardinals first nine games of the season. Caracter has played in eight games and is averaging 5 points. He was suspended the team's game against Savannah State on Wednesday for not following team policy.

"The issues I'm having with him have really nothing to do with the game of basketball," said Pitino. "I'm more interested in him as a person then I am as a basketball player."

Pitino added that Caracter wants to rejoin the squad, but the possibility of his return remains unknown.

"He wants to be back, but I'm giving him this vacation," said Pitino.

Coach Pitino also commented that he plans on starting Jerry Smith in the backcourt with Edgar Sosa against Miami on Saturday afternoon, and that sophomore point guard Andre McGee may not play due to swelling in his knee.
