Texas star has Louisville near the top

Coppell, Texas cornerback Devin Smith (5-10, 180) is one of the top defensive prospects in Texas. Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe plans to recruit the Lone Star state hard, and the talented Smith is one of the Cardinals top 2008 prospects.

Coppell, Texas cornerback Devin Smith is one of the top defensive prospects in Texas. He has been getting considerable early recruiting interest and this weekend will be attending his first junior day.

"LSU, Texas and Louisville have been texting me a lot and sending me letters," Smith said. "Notre Dame has been sending some mail, but the other three are the ones I hear from the most."

As a junior, Smith had 53 tackles and seven interceptions. As a running back he had 28 carries for 206 yards and eight touchdowns. He also returned one punt for a touchdown.

"Right now Louisville, Texas and LSU are my top three because they are showing me the most interest," Smith said. "This weekend I am going to the LSU junior day, it will be the first one I have been to."

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Smith could play corerback or running back in college, but his future is likely on defense.

"I am not going to rush into a decision," Smith said. "I want to see who offers and what they have to offer. I want to visit some schools and see what they are like."
