Cards looking at Ohio tight end

Derek Mincy, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound tight end/defensive back prospect from Mount Healthy, Ohio, has drawn early interest from Louisville.

The increased role for the tight end in Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe's offense means that the Cardinals coaching staff will spend more time searching for the right athletes for that position. Mount Healthy, Ohio prospect Derek Mincy is one that they already have their eye on.

Playing in an offense that relied heavily on the run last fall, Mincy led his team 10 receptions for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also totaled over 20 tackles from his defensive back position and returned 6 kicks for 73 yards.

"He does everything pretty well," said Mount Healthy head coach Keith Rucker. "He does a good job of making the big catch when you need it and once he gets it he's hard to bring down. He averaged almost 30 yards a catch for us last year, so this year we are going to really try to highlight him and our quarterback

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Mincy, who has yet to collect his first scholarship offer, attended Louisville's junior day last month and is the process of scheduling a number camps.

"I think Louisville is the only one that he has visited and all the MAC schools are already looking at him too," said Rucker. "Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Miami of Ohio and Bowling Green have all come by the school. He‘s planning on doing all of the camps that he can."

Mincy and his team will also participate in the Cincinnati 7-on-7 passing tournament this summer as well.

"He needs to get out there," Rucker said. "We had a down year last year so we didn't get that much attention, so the camps will be good for him."

Mincy was also an All-State honorable mention performer in wrestling as a junior.
