Duncan (SC) Byrnes cornerback Cartier Rice has been hitting the camp circuit hard this summer and the hard work paid off last week as he picked up a Big Ten scholarship offer – his first.

While new Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio offered the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Rice a scholarship, the South Carolina standout was attending camps at Louisville and Illinois over the weekend. Rice attended the Cardinals camp last Saturday, followed by Illinois' camp.

"Things are going good," Rice said. "I just got back from camps at Illinois and Louisville. I liked Louisville's camp a lot. It was nice. I'm going to Georgia's camp Friday and that will just about wrap it up for me camp-wise."

Rice visited Louisville for the Cardinals spring game in April. Louisville assistant Reggie Johnson and defensive coordinator Mike Cassity have been recruiting Rice for a while and Rice had a chance to work with both coaches at Louisville's camp.

"Apparently they like me a lot," said Rice. "They talked about getting to know me better as a person."

Though he only has one offer, Rice has a clear idea about his favorites. Rice says Louisville is in the lead, followed by Michigan State, Auburn, Marshall and Illinois.

"Louisville probably is on top," Rice said. "Michigan State is up there because they've offered. I just received their offer last week and I'm excited about it. I feel Illinois is close to offering and hopefully Louisville. Auburn, Marshall and Illinois are also on my list."

What makes Louisville standout with Rice?

"They have a winning program, a good school and great facilities," Rice said. "I also have a great relationship with the coaches. I feel it would be a great fit."

Rice, who runs a 4.5 forty, recorded 40 tackles and three interceptions as junior.

"I have good closing speed and knowledge of the game," Rice said. "I'm a physical cornerback. I need to work on maintaining my back petal and using my hands more at the line of scrimmage."
