Rick Pitino's holiday update

With Louisville (7-3) set to host Morehead State on Wednesday, Rick Pitino provided this update - and progress report - on his website, RickPitino.com. The big news item: David Padgett could return early next month.

The Tale of 2007 (7-3) - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good

  • Early road win at UNLV. A tough place to play. Good resilience down the stretch.
  • The return of Juan Palacios
  • David Padgett being cleared yesterday to workout. Could be back for the West Virginia game. A much needed boost in helping us play fundamental basketball.

    The Bad

  • Home loss to Dayton. You cannot afford to lose to non-conference teams at home.

    The Ugly

  • Our transition defense has lost us the BYU and Dayton games. Our big men need to sprint the floor better and communicate.

4 elements of good transition defense:

  • Good shot selection
  • Proper offensive spacing and balance
  • Locating the ball while sprinting back
  • Communicate early to match up properly

On the recruiting front, Samardo Samuels and St. Benedicts are the #1 ranked team in the country. His team just won the City of the Palms Classic which included a victory over Greg Monroe and he was voted MVP of the tournament.

Jared Swopshire has been improving steadily. He averaged 28 points per game in the Amare Stoudemire Invitational and was selected to the all-tournament team.

Terrence Jennings is on winter break and has not played in the last two weeks.

For those of you who traveled to Indianapolis for the Purdue game, our team thanks you for your support.

I would like to wish Dick Vitale a healthy and speedy recovery.

Holiday season is a time of giving and we would like to give thanks to all of our fans for making us one of the great traditions in college basketball.

I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
