Louisville (12-4, 2-1) used an 8-0 run in the final minutes of the game Sunday at Rutgers to put away the Scarlet Knights, 64-49.

Jerry Smith again led Louisville in scoring with 14 points. David Padgett added nine points, while Juan Palacios and Derrick Caracter both pitched in eight points each.

The win, Louisville's 7th in the past eight games, moved the Cardinals to 2-1 in the Big East and 12-4 overall. Rutgers fell to 0-4 in the league.

Once again, U of L used a strong defensive effort to outlast the Scarlet Knights, who were led by JR Griffin. Griffin scored a career-high 23 points.

Louisville harassed Rutgers with full court pressure from start to finish and forced 16 turnovers. The Cardinals held Rutgers to just 31.4 percent shooting for the game, blocked eight shots, made eight steals and out-rebounded RU 40-33.

Junior forward Terrence Williams scored only seven points, but came up big on the boards with 14 rebounds while playing 40 minutes. Edgar Sosa was the only other Louisville player in double-figures. Sosa had 10 points and 4 assists and committed just two turnovers.

Next up for Louisville: A showdown with nationally-ranked Marquette Thursday at Freedom Hall.
