Kragthorpe evaluates recruiting class

University of Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe evaluated each of his 22 signees Wednesday afternoon. What did Kragthorpe have to say about his new recruits? InsideTheVille.com has the scoop.

Darius Ashley: "He's a very good football player. He runs behind his pads and catches the ball well out of the backfield. We're very excited about him."

Keith Baker: "We had a hard time getting film on him but we really liked him. That's why he was a late addition to our class. Keith can run sideline to sideline and he's a tall, physical linebacker. He was a multi-position player and we'll play him at both MIKE and SAM linebacker."

Stephon Ball: "Stephon is a tight end and used him primarily as a flex-back or H-Back tight end. He's a guy who catches the ball well. He's a big, strong, physical target over the middle and he's not afraid to catch it over the middle. He's also a guy who is an effective blocker."

Ryan Barnes: "We had him in our camp and he flew under the radar because he was hurt going into his senior year. We identified him in our camp and really liked him. He played extremely well as a senior. He's 6-6, 300 pound and he's a flat-bellied 300 pounds. He brings a lot of size to our offensive line and a lot of athleticism. He plays with great pad level and has excellent feet."

Mario Benavides: "We'll look to play him at either guard or center. He's extremely bright and athletic. Tony Alford had to drive, swim and parachute to get to him in south Texas." Jacques Caldwell: "He comes from an excellent program. This guy is one of the fastest players in the state of Texas. He can…fly. And he's a heck of a football player."

Chris Campa: "He plays well from sideline to sideline, plays downhill and strikes people with his pads. He can also cover a lot of grass."

Maurice Clark: "He's a big, tall, physical wide receiver. He will go over the middle and catch the ball and is very good going up and getting the ball at the highest point. When it's in the air he's going to go get it."

Jon Dempsey: "He's from the same program that produced Woodny Turenne last year. Jon will play an outside linebacker position and can also play inside for us. He covers ground sideline to sideline and he comes downhill and makes plays. He's also very good in pass coverage and has a pretty nasty attitude when he gets to the ball."

Damion Dixon: "He goes and gets the ball at the highest point. We got size in this receiver class with Maurice and Damion. Damion can stretch the field vertically and has excellent hands – you see him catch the ball in his hands. That's one of the things we always look for in a high school receiver."

Dexter Heyman: "He can make plays as a defensive end and we're also going to look at him as a linebacker at the SAM linebacker position. He a guy that can run and hit. I'm really, really excited about Dexter."

Tyler Jessen: "He played on both sides of the ball in high school and he's also an excellent wrestler. I think he's a guy that can come in and have an immediate impact for us on the defensive line."

Rock Keys: "He catches the ball well and was an All-American at Jones County College. He didn't get a lot of catches because of the nature of their offense. He's a big, physical, aggressive blocker and he will be here for the summer."

Justin Matthews: "He was a product of one of the top defenses in the country this year. He will run downhill and smack you in the mouth. He can cover ground sideline to sideline in the passing game."

Charles Millenbah: "He's a big, strong, physical offensive lineman. He's a product of a football player, his father played a number of years for Oakland. I think he's a very good offensive lineman."

Nathan Nord: "A lot of people have ranked him a two-star. I question their judgement. He was offered by Florida and Miami and I don't understand why he's ranked a two-star player. But I tell you this, he is a four or five star player. This guy can play. I think Nate's got a chance to have a great career for us."

Chris Philpott: "We needed a kicker and Chris is a very good kicker. He kicked over 90 percent of his kick-offs out of the end zone. He's won numerous kicking contests off the ground. He just won a kicking competition in Florida and kicked a 60 yarder off the grass. He's got a big leg and he's also very accurate. I think he can compete for the kicking job right away."

Randy Salmon: "He plays with great explosion and can run a sub-5.0 flat forty. He can run sideline to sideline and make plays and can also stalemate a blocker at the line of scrimmage and make plays on the ball carrier. He's also a great wrestler and won the Georgia heavyweight championship last year."

Greg Scruggs: "He's a heck of a football player. I question people's judgment that rate him a two-star player. He has a huge upside."

Byron Stingily: "He was a tight end I high school and reminds me a lot of Breno (Giacomini). We're excited about him."

Zack Stoudt: "I think he can throw the ball down the field. He's a big, tall pocket-passer. He can make plays on the run both to his right and his left. He's very accurate as a passer. He led his team to 13 victories and to me that's what I look for in a quarterback."

Josh Wiley: "He's a tall, physical safety that can run downhill. He does a nice job covering the hash all the way to the sideline. He's a very good athlete."
