That's because in every tournament St. Benedict's (NJ) Prep has participated in this season, the 6'8, 240-pound Louisville-bound center has carted off Most Valuable Player honors.
Samuels, who is averaging 24 points and 8 rebounds this season, was recently named to the McDonald's All-American team – Louisville's first Burger Boy since Earl Clark two years ago. He's led St. Benedict's to a 21-1 record and a No. 3 national ranking this season in Rise Magazine's Top 25.
Last week, Samuels was dominant at the talent-laden Prime Time Shootout in Trenton, NJ. In a big win over No. 16 St. Patrick (NJ), he had 30 points and 6 rebounds. Samuels also had 25 points in a 77-63 win over Our Savior New American (NY).
Samuels took home MVP honors from the Prime Time. He's also earned won Most Valuable Player honors at the City of Palms Classic, where he outplayed Greg Monroe in a decisive win (Samuels scored 25 points to Monroe's 13); MVP of the Bojangles Shootout in North Carolina; MVP of the Nike Super 6 Invitational in Madison Square Garden. In all, Samuels has claimed seven tournament MVP awards this season.
"He puts winning first and he wants to make his team great," said St. Benedict's coach Danny Hurley.
Samuels will make his first appearance in Louisville this weekend. Saturday night his St. Benedict team will play New Creations Prep (IN) at Louisville Gardens in the Neutral Zone Hoops Showcase. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
